But your body may not recover from exercise exactly as it did 10 or 20 years ago.

Traditional strength workouts often ask your muscles to do two different jobs:

  1. Lift or push the weight.

  2. Control the weight as it comes back down.

That second part, when your muscle lengthens while resisting a load, is called the eccentric phase.

Think about lowering a dumbbell after a biceps curl, descending into a weighted squat or slowly walking downhill. Your muscles are working as they control the downward movement.

Eccentric training can be useful, but it is also strongly associated with the microscopic muscle damage that contributes to delayed-onset muscle soreness, or DOMS. That is the stiffness and tenderness that often shows up a day or two after a hard workout.

A little soreness is not always a problem. But being so sore that you avoid your next workout, move differently or struggle through your normal day is not necessary for making progress.

You do not have to feel wrecked to know that your workout worked.

The FitSpan Difference: You Push, but the Weight Never Pushes Back

FitSpan uses a method called concentric-only training.

In everyday language, that means you work during the pushing, pulling or driving portion of the exercise, without having to lower a heavy weight back into place.

Imagine performing a squat.

In a traditional weighted squat, you support the weight as you lower your body, stop it at the bottom and then push it back up. Your knees, hips, back and muscles have to control the load throughout the entire movement.

On FitSpan’s squat press machine, there is no weight pressing down on you as you move into the starting position. Resistance begins only when you push upward.

When you finish the movement, the resistance does not come crashing back toward you.

You simply reset and begin again.

This removes one of the most demanding and potentially uncomfortable parts of conventional resistance training while preserving the powerful portion of the movement that helps you become stronger.

Many people assume that being extremely sore is proof that they had a good workout.

It is not.

Soreness tells you that your muscles experienced unfamiliar stress. It does not automatically tell you that the workout was appropriate, productive or better than a workout that caused less discomfort.

The real driver of long-term results is consistency.

You need to be able to return, train again and gradually improve.

When every workout requires several days of recovery, it becomes harder to establish a routine. You may skip sessions, lose momentum or begin associating exercise with pain and exhaustion.
